Abstract

Bacillus subtilis strain VITNJ1 is a potential bacterium derived from nile tilapia’s (Oreochromis niloticus) digestive tract and known to have proteolytic activity. This research aimed to determine the protease activity of B. subtilis strain VITNJ1 bacterium. The method used were experimental design, the data were analyzed in quantitative descriptive. The research result confirms that B. subtilis strain VITNJ1 can produce protease. The proteolytic activity was 26 mm. The optimum incubation period of B. subtilis strain VITNJ1 was obtained at hour-54 with the proteolytic enzyme activity of 9.10 U/mL, the protein concentration of 110.64 mg/mL, and the specific activity of 0.082 U/mg. This research suggests that the bacteria strain could be used as an alternative probiotic bacterium in nile tilapia farming.
