General AI Policy

Gen AI Policy

In the current digital era, the integration of technology—particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI)—into the process of scientific writing has become increasingly prevalent and, to some extent, inevitable. AI offers various forms of assistance, including data processing, hypothesis formulation, argument development, and the generation of relevant text. Nevertheless, the use of AI in scientific article writing requires clear and transparent guidelines to uphold academic integrity and ensure the authenticity of scholarly work.

  1. Basic Principles of AI Use

Originality and Integrity: Authors must ensure that AI does not generate the entirety of the submitted manuscript without substantive human intellectual contribution. AI may support the efficiency and clarity of writing; however, all core ideas, concepts, and arguments must remain the intellectual property of the authors.

Transparency: Any use of AI in the writing process must be explicitly acknowledged in the introduction or acknowledgements section. Authors must specify which parts of the manuscript were developed with AI assistance and describe the nature of AI involvement.

Monitoring and Editing: Although AI may assist in sentence construction or idea formulation, authors are required to conduct rigorous review and editing to ensure that the manuscript meets established scholarly standards.

  1. Permissible Uses of AI

Sentence Composition: AI may be used to improve sentence clarity, precision, and structure. However, authors must verify that AI assistance does not distort or alter the original meaning.

Data Analysis: AI tools may be used for statistical processing, analysis of experimental results, or the generation of graphs and tables. Any AI-assisted outputs must be accompanied by a clear explanation of the analytical methods applied.

Reference Search: AI may support literature discovery and reference identification. Nevertheless, authors remain fully responsible for verifying the accuracy, relevance, and validity of all cited sources.

  1. Prohibited Use of AI

Plagiarism: Authors are strictly prohibited from using AI to produce manuscripts or manuscript sections that substantially replicate the work of others without proper attribution. AI may not be used to plagiarize, mimic, or paraphrase others’ work in a deceptive manner.

Author Replacement: AI cannot serve as a substitute for the primary author. All ideas, analyses, and research findings must originate from the human authors involved in the scholarly work.

Automated Decision Making: Authors may not rely on AI to make autonomous decisions affecting the substance, interpretation, or conclusions of the research. Authors retain full responsibility for the accuracy and scientific merit of the manuscript.

  1. Ethical Use of AI in Scientific Writing

Compliance with Academic Guidelines: AI use must conform to prevailing academic and ethical standards in scientific writing and research. Authors must ensure that AI-generated results do not violate regulations related to data use, confidentiality, or research misconduct.

Credibility and Reliability: AI tools employed in scientific writing must be credible, validated, and used responsibly. Authors must critically assess AI outputs and avoid undue reliance on automated suggestions or analyses.

  1. Acknowledgement in Articles

Authors who utilize AI in the writing process must provide a formal acknowledgement in the designated section of the manuscript.

Authors must clearly describe how AI was used, including the specific tools or software involved and the components of the manuscript that benefited from AI assistance.

Author Responsibilities

  • Authors bear full responsibility for the quality and originality of the submitted manuscript.
  • The use of AI does not diminish the authors’ obligation to meet academic standards and ensure the manuscript is free from plagiarism.
  • Authors must be prepared to provide additional clarification regarding AI use if requested by editors or reviewers.
  1. Policy on the Use of AI in Article Evaluation

Editors and reviewers of the Indonesian Aquaculture Journal (IAJ) will consider the declared use of AI during manuscript assessment. Manuscripts suspected of violating the above provisions may be rejected or returned for revision prior to publication.
